The passing of an ALL member and friend to all.

Dear members,

It is with great sadness that I send this notice of a fellow member's passing. John Greenwald died yesterday afternoon.

John was a great friend to many. He was a passionate artist and a passionate supporter of the arts. All who knew him are better for the experience. He will be missed.

I am including (below) a copy of the e-mail I received from John's brother Mark.

A NOTE FROM MARK (JOHN’S BROTHER) AND DOUG (HIS COUSIN):

We are writing this email to give you the sad news about our great friend and loved one, John Greenwald, of his passing.

John’s desire for life while fighting off all his myriad health issues came to an end yesterday, July 8th, on a Thursday afternoon. As recently as Monday he went to the movies and enjoyed Toy Story 3. On Tuesday he had a good day and even better evening with Rita eating good food and watching TV. On Wednesday morning he went into distress and died peacefully on Thursday.

John nearly died of meningitis 12 years ago. After coming out of a debilitating month long coma, he committed himself to live an active and creative life “painting naked women”, writing a media column, sharing his opinions about culture and society, and loving “lovely Rita”.

These last two days have been most remarkable for us as we have been witnessing John’s impact on so many people. His creative and journalistic work, and his stimulating engagement with people have been a gift to all of us. He will be missed.

His art and some great photos are on his website, johngreenwald.com.

Sometime in the near future we hope to celebrate John’s life, with art and good food of course. Stay tuned.

Please don't reply to this email.  Rita and John's family members will be in touch at a later date.
